The 2nd annual Athens Pride kicked off Friday August 31st in Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia, and a full schedule of events is already in place to ensure plenty of gay fun for everyone.
On Friday night, people flocked to The Go Bar for an early, unofficial pre-Pride happy hour with friends old and new.
The festival kicks off officially Thursday September 6th evening with a GLOBES Fall Reception in the University of Georgia Founders’ Gardens on the UGA campus. GLOBES – the university’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender faculty/staff organization – is hosting the all-ages event, which will include a silent auction. Proceeds from the auction will benefit the organization. Following the reception, attendees can head over to The Engine Room pub for an after-party.
On Friday, September 7, poets, singers, and artists will come together for an artists’ showcase at The Globe Bar. Also on Friday night, Drag-A-Oke – with sounds by DJ Patrick and hosted by Yasmine Alexander and LeKeisha Pryce – will take over Farm 255.
All-ages bowling at Ten Pins alley in Athens’ Homewood Hills Shopping Center on Saturday afternoon will admit the first 20 teens ages 13 – 18 free. That night, a dance at Little Kings Shuffle Club bar and nightclub amps up the energy with DJ’s and a “Wig Out” theme, with a $50 cash prize for the best wig.
Our Hope MCC welcomes all for its Pride service on Sunday morning, to be followed by a commitment ceremony and light refreshments. On Sunday afternoon, an all-ages Pride picnic will be hosted at the Lake Herrick Pavilion on UGA’s intramural fields; food and drinks will be provided, but guests are welcome to contribute both as well.
Athens Pride will conclude on Sunday night with the all-ages Athens Showgirls Cabaret closing party and drag show at The Globe Bar.
$5 donations are requested for each event, but no one will be turned away if unable to pay. Proceeds from donations will go toward growing subsequent Pride celebrations. All events are for ages 21 and up unless otherwise noted.
