No matter where you went two weeks ago when record temperatures blazed in our city, you more than likely had an oasis of central air awaiting your return. Safe and affordable may be something we take for granted but for a segment of the population living with HIV/AIDS the struggle to find and maintain housing can be overwhelming.
Living Room, Inc. (www.livingroomatl.org) is a non-profit service located in the heart of Atlanta that helps those living with HIV/AIDS acquire and maintain housing. By providing home referral and saving services, emergency housing, rental assistance and other services, Living Room aims to make sure that housing concerns are taken out of the equation for those who are already facing mounting health concerns and expenditures because of HIV/AIDS.
But they can’t do it alone. This Saturday, Living Room once again teams up with the AIDS Ministry at the Holy Cross Catholic Church to present their annual Taste of Life Fundraiser. The event brings donations from local restaurants and caterers as well as wine from around the world in a tasting format designed to raise money for the services Living Room provides. In addition to exquisite food and wine offerings, local businesses make donations for a silent auction.
Furthermore, an all-volunteer effort from Holy Cross Catholic Church’s AIDS Ministry is an integral part to the event’s success. “[They] transform a parish hall into a beautiful first class venue and we’re so grateful for their effort,” Dolph Goldenburg, Living Room’s Executive Director, praised.
Last year’s event raised more than $5,600- an amount that goes a long way to provide housing services. “For every dollar we raise at Taste of Life, we will be able to receive an additional $10 in grant money,” Goldenburg shared, “but this is more than just a fundraising event, it’s a celebration of the services and programs Living Room provides.”
