Those who remember WetBar and Blu will have no problem remembering New York-based DJ Escape who returns to Atlanta to tease the boys (and girls) at Heretic this Saturday July 14th.
But if you don’t remember the WetBar/Blu days then the list of artists that DJ Escape has remixed sounds like a who’s who of pop music. They include Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Justin Timberlake, Kristine W and the late Donna Summer. You’ve probably sweated along to one of his tracks while dancing your ass off on a Saturday night.
DJ Escape’s latest album, Global Groove Dance 5, features gay-fave Deborah Cox, Gloria Estefan, hottie Joe Jonas, and many more. The electronic sound that has always graced remixes is becoming more mainstream, a sound that DJ Escape couldn’t be happier to hear. “There was always such a gap and now it has all come together . . .producers like David Guetta, Avicci, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Axwell are making a lot of the pop records and this is what the younger generation is listening to,” he explained.
Creativity and versatility have always been a spotlight of DJ Escape’s shows. “Typically my sound is high energy tribal and vocal anthems,” he shared, “but I also play this electric sound that is popular because people want to hear it.” And while he’s a jazz-lover don’t expect him to sneak in any during his set. “It just wouldn’t go over in a club,” he joked.
Speaking of clubs, DJ Escape enjoys playing both Heretic and Jungle while in Atlanta. “I love a big room with great sound and lights,” he said.
And what might you expect at this weekend with The Heretic’s great sound and lights? Well, he’s really into the new Scissor Sisters’ album especially “Let’s Have a Kiki” which he refers to as amazing.
When asked whether he preferred studio work over live performances, DJ Escape told us about his new toy. “[The Pioneer Rmx 1000] allows me to produce while I DJ and add DJ effects while I produce,” he excitedly shared, “it is going to change the way people play. I always have been as creative as I can be while I am DJ’ing but now the possibilities are limitless.”
But his aspirations don’t stop there. His remix bucket list includes Rihanna, Adele and Mariah Carey. And that’s something we want to hear to.
