A Very Gay Valentine’s Day

February 8, 2012 | by Tristan Timothy

Valentine’s Day is in full swing. You’ve seen the aisles of chocolates in Publix. The Zales commercials have you itching to buy a diamond for no particular purpose. But what is a queer to do on Valentine’s Day?

It can get awkward for me on Valentine’s. Aside from the pressure to deliver an amazing night, there’s the pressure of being judged wherever you go. I’m not huge on PDA in the first place but on Valentine’s Day it’s almost required. So, it’s on Valentine’s especially when I find myself skirting the line of loving boyfriend and public spectacle. I’ve never had a horrible experience with public affection around other people, but I have had stares and once or twice an entire table of people moved across the restaurant so we didn’t get any gay in their food. Without trying to sound like a martyr, I think it is important to express your love, no matter what it looks like. How can I expect someone to accept me when I am tip toeing around the issue, it’s almost better to give my boyfriend a handy under the table and let them stare.

I’ve also been on both sides of the Valentine’s Day rush. Sometimes I’ve had someone to lavish with love and gifts and notes of adoration. I’ve also been on the other side, pining for someone to spend that one night with. Honestly my best Valentine’s Day was spent single. I teamed up with four of my straight and single girlfriends (actual girls…) and we hit the town.  We hit up straight bars, gay bars, yelling expletives at couples who were strolling down the street. (So wrong, I know.) We were drunk and having fun and didn’t care about our lack of a love life because we had love between us. (Of course it helped that out of the whole group I was the only one who ended up going home with someone…benefits of being gay.)

Whichever way you choose to spend your Valentine’s Day, alone, with friends or a true love, I suggest you do it loud and without regrets. Or you could just go to a bathhouse and call it a night.
