We Need a Resolution
It’s that time of year again. The gym starts crowding with those of us who have acquired a few extra pounds since our last visit in June. The smoking sections outside bars draw a smaller crowd. Everywhere people are making their New Years resolutions and if you’re like me, struggling to keep them.
I’ve had a lot of New Years resolutions over the years and failed at all of them. The workout plan usually lasts until summer but then I have to start it again the next winter. Quitting smoking, I get about two weeks into before a big bender at a bar that forces me to socially smoke. My plan this year? None, so far. I’m just not in the place to make a resolution that I know I don’t want to try to keep.
One year in an attempt to better myself (I think I had been watching too much Oprah) I became a “born again virgin.” I swore off sex before relationships and promised to save myself for the perfect boyfriend. Ironically it was during a period where I was dating a lot of people. Don’t get me wrong, I’d do some light foreplay and heavy make out sessions but sex was a no go. Needless to say this resolution didn’t last long. I ended up looking like a cock tease and found myself in the “just friends” territory with all the guys in less than a month.
Looking back at it I have more regrets for not sleeping with people than I did when I was having one night stands.
So, is it cheating to make your resolution to live without resolutions? Is it possible to set out in the world and live unabashedly and unashamed?
I think the best resolution I can make this year is to do just that.
