Catching Up With Kandi Burruss: The Housewives Star and Music “Factory” Machine

January 25, 2012 | by Joseph Brownell

Kandi Burruss knows what it takes to get a song stuck in your head. Some of y’all were probably in diapers when Kandi, part of the multi-platinum Atlanta-based group Xscape, ruled the airwaves, but whether as a performer or songwriter Kandi has been creating sweet melodies for nearly 20 years. We briefly caught up with Kandi (and that beautiful smile) during MLK weekend and found out just how much the music business has changed, her artist wish list and details about her new Bravo reality special, The Kandi Factory.

You were quite young when Xscape dropped its debut album Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha, how has the music business and your approach changed since then?

I was (pause) 17 and since then the entire business has changed. The internet for one has created a lot of that change. You don’t need to have a record deal these days to become a sensation. It has opened up a whole bunch of different outlets and avenues when it comes to making music.

Speaking of Xscape, are you still with everyone?

The only person I still am in constant contact with is Tiny, you know T.I.’s wife.

The 90’s was a great time for female led R&B groups. SWV has just released a new song, Cosign, any chance there would ever be an Xscape reunion?

No, there’s nothing like that in the works. I really just think it’s best to go out when you’re on top.

My musical tastes run from the Dixie Chicks to Drake so it was nice to see you write a song with country music singer, Jo Dee Messina, who else is on your artist wish list right now?

Carrie Underwood.

Carrie, really?

(laughs) Yes, definitely.

She has a new album in the works. We need to make some noise and get you a cut on it.

(laughs)

Okay, of course we have a Housewives question. You seem very neutral on camera, can you tell us who you’re actually close to on the show?

Phaedra is my girl.

Speaking of reality shows we hear rumors you’ve got a new one in the works. Any details?

Well, they’re definitely not rumors. Bravo has picked up The Kandi Factory and its set to premiere Sunday March 4th at 10 p.m. I’m going to be working with two people who want to break into the music industry and teach them everything I know in only 6 days.

6 days? That’s going to have to be one fast-working factory??!!

(laughs) Tune in! You’ll see. I’m very excited about this show.
