Dynamic duo
Little Jackie takes a big bite

BUCK C. COOKE | 8.27.2008

Like Solange, the team that makes up Little Jackie wanted to resurrect the Motown sound for the 21st Century. Singer/songwriter Imani Coppola (go way back to 1997 and “Legend of a Cowgirl”) and songwriter/producer Adam Pallin join creative forces and become Little Jackie on “The Stoop.”

The album masterfully resurrects some of the best soulful sounds of music past, but Little Jackie lays on a modern dose of commentary, cynicism and bite. Juicy!

“Black Barbie” is a perfect example. At first, it might sound like something from the Supremes, but the lyrics bitch-slap the media for exploiting the mishaps of Britney, Paris & Co.

The debut single, “The World Should Revolve Around Me,” is Coppola’s sarcastic ode to the difficulties artists face when trying to maintain a relationship.

“I don’t see the point of a partnership/ It won’t be long ‘til they start to trip/ Yessiree the whole world should revolve around me.”

There is plenty of retro soul to go around on “The Stoop,” and Coppola and Pallin make beautiful music together. This is a strong debut, and music lovers should hope Little Jackie gets together in the studio for a reunion soon.
